Prescription charges information

Some groups are automatically entitled to free NHS prescriptions. Others can apply for certificates that entitle them to free NHS prescriptions.

Some prescribed items are always free, including contraceptives and medication given to hospital inpatients.

This website give more information on who is eligible for free prescriptions and options for pre-payment certificates for those who are not exempt but who need to pay for regular prescriptions.

Please note, if a patient claims free NHS prescriptions that they're not entitled to, or that they don’t hold an exemption certificate for, they may have to pay a penalty charge of up to £100.
